Byzantine Ecclesiastical music is a monophonic liturgical chant (i.e., single line of melody) that has its history dating back to the early Church. It evolved from Jewish music and was inspired by the monophonic vocal music that developed in the Christian cities of Alexandria, Antioch and Ephesus. The Greek Orthodox Church of today continues to use this chant in it's Divine Liturgy.
The Association of Friends of Byzantine Ecclesiastical Music of South Australia brings this ancient Ecclesiastical music to the people of South Australia.
The Choir's Director is Mr Elias Frangoulis, who is also the Chief Cantor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
There are over 50 cantors and students of Byzantine music, who are also members of the association.
